Q. What was the Daiches’ attitude towards the weekend as a schoolboy? Why did he long for it?

A. As a schoolboy, Daiches felt happy at the arrival of the weekend. He longed for it for two solid holidays with no classes and freedom from going to school for the whole day. He felt relaxed at the weekend.

Q. What was Daiches’ general view of school life?

A. He thought that there was no freedom at school. It is a place of fierce competition where one can never relax because of abundant homework.

Q. Daiches liked holidays for their freedom—freedom from what?

A. Daiches liked holidays for they gave him freedom from the daily grind of school.

Q. How did Daiches spend his summer holidays?

A. He spent his summer holidays visiting his relatives.

Q. ‘Wishes don’t come true in this life,’ writes Daiches. What are the things he longed for but could not have?

A. He had a wish for a tricycle which later shifted to that for a bicycle. He had a longing to get a slider or cornet free of cost. But these wishes were never fulfilled.

Q. What did Daiches do with his pocket money?

A. Like his brother and sister, he saved his pocket money in a money box.
